Sermon-Based Small Groups Frequently Asked Questions

2010-2011 Small Group Schedule

What is a Sermon-Based Group?

Each group is a home fellowship made up of 8-12 people who meet weekly to discuss the previous week's sermon topic and Bible verses, to support one another, and to share their lives. A trained leader and host lead each group. An average gathering lasts for an hour and a half. Light refreshments may be served before or after.

When and Where Do They Meet?

Groups meet on various days, afternoon, nights of the week in homes throughout Brunswick County.

How Long Do They Last?

Each group semester lasts about 10 weeks. The Fall semester begins mid September and lasts until the week prior to Thanksgiving. The Winter semester begins mid January and lasts through end of March. The Spring semester begins mid April and lasts through the end of June. At the end of each semester, you will have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group or even taking a break. Most groups stay together throughout the entire year but do not meet mid-June through August.

What is the Required Commitment?

Joining a group requires a 10 week commitment to attend weekly meetings. This commitment is the key to a strong group. You have the first three weeks to attend the group to make sure it's a good fit for you. At the end of each semester, you have the choice of recommitting for another semester, trying a new group, or taking a break from groups altogether.

What Does It Cost?

It is free to join a group! There may be a nominal cost at times for curriculum if the group decides to study something other than the Sunday sermon for a time

I have Young Children, Can They Come To Small Group with Me?

Your walk with God will affect generations to come, starting with your children. Therefore, because it is important to us that you have a healthy family, we are willing to help pay for your childcare while you go to small group. The answer to who and where are freely decided by you - the parent. Many groups opt to have a sitter at the place they meet, others drop their children off with family, and still others invite a sitter to their own home while they are away at group. The choice is yours and we’ll help.  Just fill out a childcare reimbursement form if you would like to be reimbursed and mail it to the office or drop it in the offering basket on Sunday morning.

How Do I Choose A Group?

When selecting a group, we strongly recommend you choose a group based on its leader-host team and station-in-life, rather than its location. Over the years, we've found that groups do best when members share a common station-in-life and other interests with their leaders, hosts, and other group members. In the end, you'll find it's worth the drive!
Our groups are divided in the following Station-in-Life groupings: Singles, Young Married, Young Families, Parents of Children K-6, Parents of Teens, Empty Nesters, 20-Something, and College. Remember, these station-in-life groupings are intentionally kept fuzzy and are meant to help you self-select an appropriate group for you. They are not intended to box you in.
If you have any questions (especially if you are new to Generations Church), please don't hesitate to call the church, and we will gladly assist you. Keep in mind that it might take more than one try before you find the perfect fit, but don't worry, you'll find it!

Can I Lead A Group?

Leading a group requires an interview, sharing you personal testimony with us, and some training. We prefer our leaders to have been an active part of a small group environment in the past, though not necessarily at Generations Church. Contact April Porterfield or Ray Moore with your questions.
